I’m in Thailand at the moment, but wanted to take a second out of this busy day to share something personal with you.

Is that okay? Hope so…

There have been a lot of influential people in my life, those who have helped me grow and become the person I am today.

Whether personally or professionally, I’ve developed my skills, ambitions and even personalities because of my role models.

In 2005, I lost my first mentor, Corey Rudl, who was also my role model in business, to an automobile accident.

Corey Rudl was an inspiration to many, and he has left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire other entrepreneurs and Internet Marketers to succeed in their businesses.

Just several days ago, as the entire world knows, we lost yet another inspiration, who is also arguably the greatest entertainer who ever lived.

Yes, I’m talking about Michael Jackson.

You might find it weird that I’m talking about Michael Jackson on a marketing and business blog, in a post that’s currently talking about personal growth, development and role models.

Actually, it’s quite relevant; let me explain…

Ever since I was a little kid, I had been the biggest Michael Jackson fan.

I owned every one of Michael Jackson’s albums on CDs, singles on cassettes as well as concerts and video specials on VCDs and VHS (yes, this was back in the day haha).

And to top it off, I knew every word to almost all of his songs and even taught myself how to do some of Michael Jackson’s most famous patented dance moves.

Last weekend at my live event in Sydney, in honor of my fallen childhood hero, I even did Michael Jackson’s moonwalk while on stage!

To many of my family and friends, I was strange for picking Michael Jackson as my idol growing up… but to me, it actually felt right, because I saw a lot of myself in him.

In fact, to this day, even though I am no longer the die hard Michael Jackson fan I once was as a kid, he still played a huge role into developing me to the person that I am today.

If you know or have met me personally, you know that much like Michael Jackson, I am typically a soft spoken introvert who’s usually very shy to even approach anyone I don’t know, and even have very few words to those I have known intimately for years.

But when my gameface is on, and you put a microphone in my hand – whether on stage, teleseminar, webinar or any other interview – I transform into a completely different person, just like Michael Jackson.

For example, if you follow me on Twitter, you may also know that I use two main Twitter accounts, one for a different “personality.”

Some people think that it’s a marketing “gimmick,” some think I’m doing this to be silly, or creative.

The truth is – I DO have two different personalities (multiple ones, in fact), and those who know me can attest to this.

How did this happen?

Well, it first started when I began taking Michael Jackson as my childhood role model, and I had learned to develop a different persona for my line of work.

In my business, I cannot be the shy, soft-spoken introvert who has nothing to say and can’t hold a conversation if my life depended on it.

Because of the impact Michael Jackson had in my life growing up, I learned that I must create a new persona for myself different from my own in order to excel in what I do.

So I did…

That then transpired into my developing additional multiple personalities for other walks of my life, wearing different hats as each situation sees fit.

Because of this, not only do I believe, but I am also 100% positive that Michael Jackson’s inspiration made me a better entrepreneur, information marketer and public speaker.

It has made me strive to become my best in what I do.

And of course, this is just one of my personal stories about the kind of impact Michael Jackson made in my own life, as I’m sure there are millions of other stories from others who have been impacted by the King of Pop the same way.

Whether you share these sentiments or not, agree with me or not, and whether or not you even like the man, there is no doubt Michael Jackson has touched the lives of millions.

This is the power of a role model.

It’s strange to see that Michael Jackson’s legacy in passing will grow far beyond that than in living, but that is life.

And of course, that is the way it should be…

I’m not saying that we should not appreciate people and things while we still have them; by all means, grasp on to them with every last strength you have before it’s too late.

But in the end, nothing lasts forever, so we must be sure to leave something behind not just to be remembered by, but also things that will make an impact to others long after we’re gone.

Now, obviously not all of us are in the position to change millions of lives, but even if we can change just one, that can make all the difference in the world.

Imagine for a moment…

You’re walking down a long aisle with a large gathering of people, inside a room full of nostalgia and emotion, when you’ve come to the shocking realization that you’re sitting in at your very own funeral.

What are your family members saying about you?

What are your friends saying about you?

What are your colleagues saying about you?

What are your fans and followers saying about you?

What kind of life have you led?

What kind of a legacy will you leave behind?

This post is not about Michael Jackson, it’s not about Corey Rudl, it’s not even about me – it’s about YOU…

I know this is probably a deeper conversation than you were planning on having with me today, but recently, things have happened to me personally that have really affected my outlook on life.

It has grown my appreciation for what I have and has taught me the importance of not taking anything I have for granted.

Because none of us will know what’s going to happen tomorrow, or even today, I want to make sure that we are making each moment here count.

Similar to what I titled my very first blog post back in April 2004 – Today is indeed the first day of your life.

What will you do today that will make a difference tomorrow?

My advice? Begin building your legacy now…

Hello from Cabin 5151 onboard the Carnival Miracle somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean at Mike Filsaime’s annual Internet Marketers Cruise!

The Internet Marketers Cruise is always a great way to kick off the new year, and I have been fortunate to be a part of it every January for the past few years.

This time, our 8 day cruise around the Caribbean took us to St. Marteen, St. Kitts and Tortola, which is a beautiful island on the British Virgin Islands.

As always, the organizers of the Internet Marketers Cruise never fails in over-delivering, and I want to personally thank Mike Filsaime, Paulie Sabol, Donna Fox and Tom Beal – along with Captain Lou Edwards – on organizing yet another million-dollar mastermind vacation of a lifetime!

Previous years, the Internet Marketers Cruise was by invitation only, and the only way to receive an invitation is if you are within the “inner circle” of the Internet Marketers.

One of the reasons (and in my opinion, the major reason) this year’s Internet Marketers Cruise became the best one yet is that we have actually extended the invitation outside of just the “inner circle”…

And as you can see from our group photo above, the Carnival Miracle was literally dominated by Internet Marketers who took full advantage of the amazing week-long fun and networking experience!

Over the course of the 8 days, I had a ton of fun hanging out with members of the new “Rockstar Platinum” crew – Lee Collins, Robin Collins, James Lee, James Delong, Lasse Rouhiainen and Amanda Swigert.

It was also great to re-unite with previous Internet Marketers Cruise alumni, including Mike Morgan, Holly Morgan, Deborah Micek, JP Micek, Armando Montelongo, Veronica Montelongo, Joel Therien, Illona Therien, Mark Braunstein, Scott Tousignant, Bob Jenkins, Jennie Armato, Gary Byrne, Eelco de Boer, Howard Tiano, Cynthia Tiano, Matt Mazur, Michelle Galvin and Steve Pdilla.

I was also very excited to see some of my friends on the Internet Marketers Cruise as well, like Jeff Dedrick, Frank Sousa, Simone Blum, Tom Bell, Micheal Savoie, Frank Rumbauskas, Stacy Makdad, Reed Floren, Odinn Sorensen, Tracy Repchuk, Tim Houston, and Nathalie Fiset.

However, the best part has gotta be meeting completely new friends onboard, and have gotten to know Dr. Letitia Wright, Rich Cook, Jon Atwood, Vince Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell, Mike Deiure, Arnel Ricafranca, Susanne Jorgensen, Chris Cho, Annette Dubow, Matt Haslem, Jeanette Fisher, Julio Mattos, Amanda Steadman, Sharon Worsley, Mike Mahon, Jose Soto, Vince DelMonte, Wendy Joy Hart, Cindy Battye, Clay Franklin, Phil Henderson, Juliet Easton, Jon Benson, Wayne Buckhanan, Martyne Lo Russo, Scott Spurlock, and literally dozens more that I can’t remember right now!

The mastermind sessions, organized social events and island excursions have made the 2009 Internet Marketers Cruise a remarkable experience…

But I must say that one of the biggest highlights of the trip was finally meeting and getting to know one of my biggest inspirations in entrepreneurship, Robert G. Allen.

I had met Robert Allen once back in May of 2006 when I attended the Enlightened Wealth Institute seminar in Anaheim, but we never had the chance to really connect at that event.

We almost shared the stage once as well in September 2007 at the World Internet Main Event in San Francisco, but that didn’t work out either when Robert Allen was unable to make it.

But this time, stuck on a cruise ship with me for 8 whole days, Robert Allen had nowhere to go, and I finally had the chance to lock him down to have some private conversations with him.

Robert Allen and I actually hit it off quite well, not only spending some time on the beach, but also in his suite along with the Rockstar Platinum crew setting up his new Twitter account and teaching him all about how to use the most powerful force in social media today.

2009 Is Here ~ Happy New Year!

Here on the West Coast, we’re finally winding down to the final hours of 2008…

Even though we’re behind most of the world where 2009 is already underway, I actually appreciate having the extra time to reflect on 2008 and to be able make my final post of the year.

A lot has happened this year, both positive and negative, which has resulted in a time of my life that I will never forget.

I’ve learned many things about life (both personally and professionally) – a lot of them the hard way – that will greatly affect the way I move forward.

In retrospective, this experience has taught me a ton about how to proceed with my own business as well.

As we step into the new year, it’s traditional for many of us to make a new year’s resolution, so that we can make goals that we’ll strive to achieve.

Since my business direction will result in my traveling internationally for over 50% of 2009, my new year resolution is to not lose touch with my friends, colleagues, partners, clients and the countless relationships we’ve worked so hard to build.

In 2008, I spent pretty much every weekend on the road, either speaking at seminars around the country or doing the same in other countries, while building teams and companies at the same time.

As a matter of fact, I can count the number of weekends I was actually at home with one hand.

In 2009, my focus will shift to working on building a lot of the same teams and momentum in other countries by starting new businesses, growing existing ones and organizing more of my own live events.

I’ve seen and witnessed the tremendous value live events have brought to attendees, and I want to be able to capture more of that by expanding my brand to as many parts of the world as I can.

With that said, I know it’s going to be a challenge keeping and maintaining my current online relationships, not to mention building new ones.

That’s why I want to upkeep my level of networking accomplished through attending live events in 2008 by increasing my presence online through the power of social media sites and social networking.

Yes, I’m talking about the popular social media portals like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and the latest one to hit the scene which I predict is gonna be HUGE in 2009… Google Friend Connect!

Social media is going to be my primary way of communicating with my friends and partners in 2009, and I’d definitely like to connect with you on there as well

As my Cathay Pacific flight landed in SFO after my 18 hour journey from Singapore to San Francisco, I turned on my Blackberry to hundreds of new messages accrued from over the past several weeks while I was in Asia.

Quite a number of them were sent recently by my buddy, Stu McLaren, who was pretty persistent in contacting me through emails, instant messaging, both the public and private streams on Twitter and even leaving me a comment on my blog

Poor Stu McLaren must’ve been freakin out, cuz he actually had me scheduled to kick off his annual Marketing Predictions Call, which is a virtual event Stu McLaren puts together every year to raise money for a charity called World Teacher Aid, an organization founded by his wife, Amy McLaren.

The reason I’ve agreed to volunteer my time with Stu McLaren is not just because Stu and Amy McLaren are my friends, and not just the mere fact that I’ll be training and giving online entrepreneurs 2009 insights that will help them learn more about Internet Marketing…

Even more importantly, I am taking this as an opportunity (especially in the spirits of the Holiday Season) to give back by helping out a worthy cause…

You see, Amy McLaren’s World Teacher Aid is a non-profit organization that focuses on bringing education to children by building schools and establishing feeding programs all around the world, as well as funding full-time salaries and supporting children in less fortunate countries like Uganda, Ghana, El Salvador and Kenya.

Every year, Stu McLaren holds an online fundraising event for his wife’s cause by interviewing the top Internet Marketers in the world, and this year promises to be the biggest one yet with four times as many volunteered marketing experts than last year!

I’m very honored to be a part of Stu McLaren’s Marketing Predictions Call this year, and will be sharing my Google predictions during my scheduled interview TONIGHT…

Hello from Ventura Technology Development Center on the filming set of the Social Media Simplified Web 2.0 Master Class in Ventura, CA!

Even though I only had one hour of sleep that I snuck in during my 6am flight from San Jose to Ontario, I was too excited to be tired as my partner Andy Huang and I then made a 2-hour commute to Ventura to take part in Social Media Simplified filming.

As a late addition to the Social Media Simplified team of talented presenters, I was extremely stoked to accept the invitation to join the ranks of Linda Taylor, Deborah Micek (AKA CoachDeb), Mari Smith, Denise Wakeman (one half of the BlogSquad team with Patsi Krakoff) and Nancy Marmolejo to speak on Google Optimization through Social Media.

Throughout the day, we learned a ton of great information about marketing with social media, utilizing Web 2.0 tools such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and CoachDeb’s own Blog i360 system as a blogging platform.

During my time on stage, I was excited not only to share some of the social media tools, widgets, plugins and strategies that I personally use for my own blog to maximize the quality and quantity of traffic coming into my website, but also to have some fun and share some laughs with the great audience, as well.

In fact, we had so much fun that most of the attendees at Social Media Simplified felt that my presentation was more entertaining than it was informative! (Haha… just kidding…)

All joking aside, I’m confident that every one in attendance had a good time and hopefully, have already begun implementing some of the effective social media marketing strategies shared on the Social Media Simplified stage.

Towards the end of the shooting, all the presenters got together on stage to organize an expert panel, where we conducted live critiques of attendees’ blogs and answered questions from the audience.

After the Social Media Simplified event was over, we brought the party over to our VIP dinner at a nearby French restaurant, where we had the opportunity to network more with one another.

Before leaving town the following evening, I spent the day hanging out with CoachDeb, Andy Huang and James Lee, taking advantage of some of the best dim sum in town, as well as organizing our own “working party,” complete with sake and snacks!

Overall, I had a ton of fun and made a bunch of new connections at Social Media Simplified, so I am definitely glad I was able to make it out to Southern California for the one day event before returning to Singapore next week for The SMART Seminar.

Last night, I was a special guest on Successfool.tv, a live streaming show hosted by my very good friend, Alejandro Reyes.

For those of you who don’t know Alejandro Reyes, he was my right hand guy for a while as my lead apprentice, later on became my Operations Manager and Relationship Specialist, and now a business partner and respected colleague.

I won’t go into all the details about how we met and everything because we actually tell the story on the show, which was streamed live as a chatroom packed with active viewers watched on and interacted with what was going on in the show.

The first video has a quick introduction by Alejandro Reyes, then chaos ensues for a while as we battle with technology to try to get our first ever split screen interview going.

It was a miserable failure, but we included the outtakes here for your viewing pleasure haha

The second video picks up after we decided to use a Skype call instead, and contains most of the content in regards to relationship building and how to maximize social media to leverage networking and credibility.

Hello from Room 345 of the Long Island/Huntington Hilton at the Three Sides of Traffic workshop in Long Island, New York!

The Three Sides of Traffic workshop is a sequel to the Two Sides of Traffic workshop I did with Howie Schwartz last December in San Diego, CA.

This time, we were joined by our good friend and fellow traffic generation expert, Ross Goldberg, and the three of us decided to team up to reveal some of our latest and most coveted traffic weapons yet.

And as a surprise bonus, we introduced an additional fourth side of traffic utilizing the power of online and offline marketing, presented by hybrid marketing experts Lee Collins and Robin Collins on the second day of the event.

The additional speakers and content were pleasant surprises for our attendees, some of whom flew from as far as Germany to join us in New York this weekend.

We always have fun at our own workshops, especially when we are joined by fellow marketing friends, whether they attend to contribute, or even just to learn.

At the original Two Sides of Traffic workshop, we had VIPs like Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, Mark Widawer, Mike Koenigs, Jason Moffatt, Ryan Kaltman and Rex Wisehart.

This weekend at the Three Sides of Traffic workshop, our VIP guests included Ken McArthur, Donna Fox, Sanyika Calloway-Boyce, as well as Mike Filsaime and several members of his team, Joe Jablonski, Jason Dinner, Michelle Galvin and Lucius Kern.

In fact, on Thursday before Three Sides of Traffic started, Ross Goldberg, Donna Fox, Lee Collins, Robin Collins and myself visited with Mike Filsaime and his team at their Long Island office.

We spent the day hanging out there and entertained ourselves with foosball, movies and video games.

Back to the Three Sides of Traffic workshop itself, Howie Schwartz, Ross Goldberg and I felt that the content wasn’t enough, and that we should have some social proof that our teachings were more than just theory.

Just like at the original workshop where Howie Schwartz and I demonstrated video marketing, we decided at the very last minute to do another live demonstration, this time the power of Web 2.0 technology and social media – just to prove that these strategies actually work (and to have a little fun).

An impromptu decision was made to actually take our workshop on the air with UStream, and we didn’t even really get the word out about the show until literally within about 10 minutes before we were scheduled to go live!

Implementing just a few of the social marketing tactics covered during the first half of day one, the attendees began using Twitter, Facebook and email to begin spreading the word about our live show.

Despite the time constraint we were working with, we still managed to get close to 400 unique viewers from all over the world (including Singapore, Spain, UK, Australia, and Canada) watching our show within just several minutes of notice!

We even had special visits from our expert friends like Tom Beal, Ben Mack, Pat O’Bryan, Jason Moffatt, Alejandro Reyes and Lasse Rouhiainen, just to name a few.

And as the show went on, more and more viewers joined us, and before the weekend was over, we had almost 600 views to our Ustream channel.

The viewers were also very much into the interaction, so we also had an extremely interactive chatroom that remained active during the show, and over 60 people actually remained in the room to chat even hours after we went off the air, which goes to show just how powerful social media is for traffic generation today, and will continue to be.

As a matter of fact, the sudden influx of visitors flocking to view our Three Sides of Traffic show impacted the streaming activity so much, that our show actually made it to the FRONT PAGE of Ustream while we were still live!

Oh, and that didn’t just happen once…

Our show made it to the homepage of Ustream AGAIN the next day when we went live on the air for the second time:

Hey, I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty darn cool!

Hello from Room 1170 of the Drury Plaza Hotel at Pat O’Bryan’s UnSeminar 5 in San Antonio, Texas!

It’s great to return to San Antonio since my very first Internet Marketing seminar in May of 2006, as well as my first speaking engagement three months later in August, also happened right here in San Antonio.

But this time, it was a much more exciting experience…

In front of a jam packed room, I had the honor of sharing the stage with Dr. Joe Vitale, Craig Perrine, Bill Hibbler, Ben Mack, Donna Fox, Eric Farewell, Scott Lewis, Tony Laidig, Erica Douglass, and of course, Pat O’Bryan himself.

As with most seminars, the live networking at UnSeminar 5 was amazing, especially with the killer line-up of speakers and motivated attendees.

However, you know that time has definitely changed when the power of Web 2.0 not only brought on an additional 150 viewers from all around the world through live streaming…

But Twitter (one of the most popular Web 2.0 social marketing tools available today for networking) was also responsible for selling 1/3 of the tickets to the event, as well as booking several of the speakers!

Plus, throughout the weekend, we continued to network both online and offline, getting more and more people to sign up for Web 2.0 profiles like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and more.

UnSeminar 5 was probably one of the most interactive Internet Marketing conferences I’ve been a part of that encouraged so many people to take action, whether or not they were live at the actual event.

I personally had a lot of fun not only at the conference itself, but the most invaluable experiences of all was the opportunity to hang out with speakers and attendees alike for lunch, dinner and throughout the evenings at the Riverwalk, Alamo and some of the more happening downtown areas.

Now, because my camera is broken (boo) and I haven’t gotten a replacement yet, I’m now at the mercy of my friends who did take photos to send them to me.
